Once again, please forgive me to write in English, but my French is really bad ! I hope you can understand me. If not, I´d try with an automatic translator, but results could be even worst!
I want to show you the Project I´m involved. Looking for information in internet about this bike, I found this nice site plenty of KTM addicts, so, I´d like to share with you my advances and troubles with this bike. I hope that one day, not very far, I can enjoy of ride it in the dirt…
The bike is a 390 81, in not very good conditions, as you can check through next pictures. The firsts steps has been dismount completely the bike and create an inventory of the problems and parts to be solved or changed..
Firstly and overall image.
As you can see, it´s necessary a full restore…this bike look to have had a very hard live in the past
Let see some funny details which say a lot of things this bike suffered last 32 years ... 🤬
Gear shift broken? No problem…a piece of curved tube and a welding point is enough
Need rear footpegs?...A Black Decker is the solution…
Protection for the engine? Aluminium plate? No no, it´s to expensive…let´s go to the house in construction near and take a piece of iron..
These are a few examples..but the bike is really in very bad conditions, so, let´s take the torque wrench, a beer bottle and a pair of hours later…
Dismounting the carburator, I found a sample of the things I ´ll found later into the engine
Emptying the oil of gear box I saw suspicious bubles…

Nice, isn´t it?
Gearbox doesn´t work properly , but sprockets and axels looks ok so I think could be and adjust problem..( I hope, at least…)
…I will show you more advances in the future days, meanwhile, let me cry for a while.. :cry: :cry:

Si, pensaba que la primera KTM refrigerada por agua era del 82, pero parece que hubo algún prototipo anterior…!!!
Yes I though that 1st KTM watercooled was built in 1982, but there was a former prototype!!
No mas problemas ocultos...aparte de los habituales, rodamientos, retenes, oxido, plasticos ...
No more hiden problems...just ball bearings broken, rust, seal rings, plasctics...
Yes, I was afraid of bad relations between wáter ad magneium, but cases looks (more or less) ok…
I have to check cylinder diameter, but could be a 350 as per cylinder and cylinder head design.
In my bike , tank looks extrange for a 81 model. I saw other bikes with a smaller tank
I see that your bike originally had a Ohlins remote reservoir schok absorbers. Did you rebuild them?
Related to frame colour I´ve seen in other topics than RAL2002 is the usual for this bikes. Did you use this colour for your frame?

those logos are NOT plastic ones, they are alloy and made by Acerbis.
Don't be too happy, those pictures are quite old and I remember now, I've sold them about one year ago to Martin.

This weekend I´ve continued fixing some issues before to try to start again the engine
Firstly, checking electricals conections. Now spare plug Works! I hope that timing have been set correctly..
I´ve filled the engine with oil and I´ve not detected any leaks, great!
And finally, I´ve mounted some plastic parts just to see the effect...and of course, to share with you the progress. Look nice!
